When I read Mexitron's touching review of Katie the Pest, inspiration set in and resulted in what you are about to read. Although Mia Doi Todd has never formally expressed any desire to touch my "meaty man vagina", one can only hope that a nice review just might change her mind.
Mia Doi Todd has just released an album this month called Manzanita Plug Research and will be playing for free every Monday of this month February at the Echo in Echo Park. I think they call these things a residency. Whatever. So I went to the first one, she had a pretty hip dj warm up the crowd with even hipper music. As I made my way past all the cocaine haircuts, I found a nice spot not to close to the stage. Mia started the set with a nice acoustic song. I started to remember what it felt like to be in love again and then quickly grounded myself cause love is nothing but rubbish anyway. With the next song, Mia Doi Todd had won me over and I could see myself participating in that so called Valentines commercial shit day. With a full band now, Mia’s sound has not lost a beat, its still sounds warm, soothing and sad (in a good way). If you like Cat Power you have to check out Mia Doi Todd. Yeah I know its slit you’re wrist type stuff but Mia has her own voice and its less gloomy than Cat Power.
She is a Los Angeles native and has been making music for years any informed indie record shop should carry her albums. She has one album through Sony music, The Golden State, that should still be in print. The Sony deal, however, is apparently over. She was also part of Lady Fest Los Angeles and has collaborated with Adventure Time (Frosti and Daedalus) and Dntel. You get the point, she’s hott and been in fast company. (By the way, I mean those two t's.) Frankly I am stunned at how under appreciated she is. Could be some kind of anti LA artist thing?
Anyways you can change that by coming out to see her. Next week will feature dj José, the week after Dntel will spin, and Frosti will spin on the last week. She has other artists headlining, so it’s going to be a good mix of music. Seriously if you want entertainment for free, this is it. Maybe we could even get Mexitron’s ass to come out, but that might keep him from writing such cock touching reviews. Nevermind. Everyone else see Mia Doi Todd at the Echo and Mexitron keep up the reviews coming.
